To study a course of AS levels you will be expected to achieve a Grade B or above in your chosen subjects (or a related one - see details in subject section) at GCSE. You will be expected to achieve a minimum of 5 grades C or above, including English and Mathematics. In addition, before accepting you onto an advanced level programme we will take into account your average GCSE points score. You should be aiming for a score in excess of 5.5 to give you a good basis for success at A-level. You can calculate your GCSE point score as shown below:
| A* | 8 points | E | 3 points |
| A | 7 | F | 2 |
| B | 6 | G | 1 |
| C | 5 | U | 0 |
| D | 4 |
We would not start you on an A level course where you did not have a good chance of success.
Your behaviour and attitude in Year 11 will also be taken into account in considering your application to join the Sixth Form. We welcome almost all of our students back because they have worked to deadlines, behaved well and will be good role models for younger students. If you do not have such a reputation, your application is unlikely to be successful.
If, at the end of Year 12, you achieve a D grade in at least 3 of your AS subjects then you should be permitted to continue into Year 13 to study A2 level subjects. As a grade E at AS is unlikely to lead to success at A2 and it is unlikely to be appropriate for students to continue with a subject at A2 if they have achieved an E at AS. Students may only move on to Year 13 if they are studying for a full programme of 3 A levels.
As part of our programme of developing key skills students must avail themselves of the opportunity to re-sit English and Mathematics GCSE in Year 12, if they have not yet achieved at least C grades and will not be able to continue into Year 13 without these passes.
