Introduction

“A-level ICT...is simply about using Computers. Computing courses are concerned with an intellectual discipline which underpins computational processes and their application to the design of computers and software.” Prof. Nigel Smart, Head of Computer Science, University of Bristol

AS/A2 Computing is suited to those who want to extend their personal interest in computers, and to develop skills such as programming. During the course you will gain an in-depth understanding of how the computer works and what you can make it do. It is an ideal course for those interested in one of the most rapidly advancing areas of technology, leading to challenging and stimulating careers.

Course Content

Do you get a ‘buzz’ from solving puzzles and problems? The emphasis on this course is problem-solving. Students learn computer programming-a valuable, useful and interesting skill. They then apply this skill by writing programs of their own to solve problems. The course also covers computer hardware, software, software engineering, databases, networking and the Internet – and how these can be used to solve problems.

Assessment

Via a combination of coursework and external examination.

Requirements

To take this course, students must have obtained at least a B in GCSE Mathematics. This demonstrates that the student has the necessary aptitude to tackle computer programming; although no previous knowledge of computer programming is expected.
