Course content

Unit 1 Biology and disease covers biological molecules (such as proteins, carbohydrates and fats) and their role in the digestive system, cell biology and microscopy, lung structure and function, heart structure and function and the role of the immune system in protecting us from disease.

Unit 2 The variety of living organisms covers species diversity, sampling organisms, genetics and further biochemistry.

Unit 4 Populations and the environment covers the formation of ecosystems, stability of ecosystem, energy transfer, photosynthesis, respiration, human activity on ecological balance, and genetic variation in populations.

Unit 5 Control in cells and organisms covers the nervous and hormonal systems, homeostasis and gene expression.

A workbook can be purchased for £10.95 to support class work.

There is also the possibility of a field trip in the summer term to improve coursework and investigative skills for the AS Year starting 2009.
