Introduction

Board: EdExcel

Art A level enables you to learn new skills and develop your own style as an artist You will be encouraged to engage creatively with themes and ideas and to consider how other artists have done the same. You will aim to develop your skills as a visual communicator in a world that increasingly bombards us visually. You will work in a studio environment and will have space to continue working beyond your lesson times. You will further develop your drawing skills and work in a variety of materials from paint, print, sculpture, digital art etc depending on your personal preferences. You will be encouraged to attend extra curricular life drawing classes to help develop a strong portfolio of work for your course and for interview purposes.

Your first year will involve practical coursework and a practical examination with the sketchbook forming the basis of your studies. In the second year you will produce practical coursework using your own starting points, styles and ways of working. You will submit a related art historical study and will complete the year with a practical examination of 12 hours. For both years you will be assessed on an exhibition of your work.

This course is suitable for creative art students who wish to extend their knowledge and practical skills creating original work.
This course can also be taken in combination with Textiles or Graphics AS, but due to the similar deadlines and structure you may wish to take advice if you plan to do this.

You will also have the opportunity to attend trips and will be encouraged to visit galleries in your own time. You will need to spend 4-5 hours a week working on your sketchbook.
