Course content

Year 12 (AS)
Unit 1 - Introduction to Financial Accounting
This unit is designed as the foundation for the course. Students will learn the purpose of accounting and develop an understanding of double entry book-keeping. Students will be able to verify the accuracy of accounting records and learn to prepare final accounts for a sole trader.

Unit 2 - Financial and Management Accounting
Students will develop their ability to produce final accounts for sole traders as well as limited companies and assess their financial strengths and weaknesses using ratio analysis. Students will be introduced to the concept of budgeting and develop an understanding of how ICT is used in accounting.

Year 13 (A2)
Unit 3 - Further Aspects of Financial Accounting
Students will develop an understanding of international accounting standards and be able to prepare accounts suitable for publication. Students will study techniques and procedures relevant to partnerships and prepare final accounts based on incomplete records.

Unit 4 - Further Aspects of Management Accounting
Students will learn how accounting techniques can be used to aid the management of a business and contribute to effective decision making. This will include costing, manufacturing accounts, investment appraisal, budgeting and variance analysis. Social factors will also be taken into consideration.
